Job Description
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced z/OS System Programmer to join our mainframe systems team. Associate will take end-to-end ownership of mainframe infrastructure from design and installation through ongoing performance management and collaborate closely with platform architects and application teams to ensure reliability, security, and availability of mission-critical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, install, configure, and maintain mainframe z/OS systems software and associated hardware components.
- Perform SMP/E operations — RECEIVE, APPLY, and ACCEPT — for PTF and product maintenance.
- Manage Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD) and IODF updates to support infrastructure changes.
- Monitor system performance using SMF/RMF data and conduct capacity planning to ensure optimal resource utilization.
- Install, configure, and provide ongoing support for ISV (Independent Software Vendor) products on the mainframe.
- Administer Unix System Services (USS/z/OS UNIX) including file systems, daemons, and shell environments.
- Troubleshoot complex system issues across z/OS components; participate in on-call rotation for critical mainframe support.
- Collaborate with application, network, and security teams to deliver integrated mainframe solutions.
- Maintain system documentation, change records, and standard operating procedures in alignment with ITIL practices.
- Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution for the mainframe environment.
Required Skills & Experience
- Deep hands-on expertise with the z/OS operating system and its core subsystems (JES2/JES3, SDSF, ISPF, VTAM, TCP/IP).
- Proficiency in SMP/E for software installation and maintenance management.
- Strong working knowledge of Unix System Services (USS) on z/OS.
- Experience with Hardware Configuration (HCD/IODF) and I/O definition.
- Solid understanding of capacity planning principles and performance management methodologies.
- Ability to analyze SMF records, RMF/CMF reports, and system logs for performance tuning.
- Experience supporting and maintaining ISV products in a mainframe environment.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to work effectively under pressure during incidents.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to document technical procedures clearly for varied audiences.
Nice to Have
Candidates with any of the following will have a distinct advantage:
- RACF (Resource Access Control Facility) administration — defining users, groups, data set profiles, and auditing.
- z/VM hypervisor administration and management, including guest configuration and performance tuning.
