Mainframe Business Analyst – Insurance Domain
Location: Erie,PA
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Business Analyst with strong expertise in the Insurance domain (Life/Health/P&C). The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between business stakeholders and technical teams, analyze legacy mainframe applications, define business requirements, and support modernization or enhancement of insurance systems.
Key Responsibilities
Business Analysis
- Gather, analyze, and document business requirements, functional specifications, and user stories for insurance applications.
- Conduct detailed analysis of policy administration, claims, billing, underwriting, and rating workflows.
- Collaborate with business users to understand enhancements, defects, and process gaps.
- Perform impact analysis for changes in mainframe systems.
Mainframe System Analysis
- Understand and analyze legacy systems built on COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, CICS.
- Review and interpret data structures, data flows, and business rules embedded in mainframe applications.
- Work with development teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
- Support system testing by creating test scenarios, reviewing test results, and validating data on mainframe screens or datasets.
Insurance Domain Expertise
- Deep understanding of insurance processes:
- New Business & Underwriting
- Policy Issuance & Endorsements
- Claims Lifecycle
- Premium Calculation & Rating
- Compliance & Regulatory requirements
- Document and maintain industry-standard workflows and business rules.
Project Collaboration
- Work with cross‑functional teams including Actuarial, Underwriting, Claims, IT Development, QA, and Product Owners.
- Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies: grooming, sprint planning, demos, retrospectives.
- Support UAT and coordinate with business teams for final signoff.
Required Skills
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of Mainframe technologies: COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS (reading/debugging experience preferred).
- Ability to perform data analysis using SQL/DB2 queries.
- Knowledge of file systems like VSAM.
- Familiarity with batch jobs, job dependencies, and scheduling tools (Control-M, CA7, etc.).
Business & Functional Skills
- In-depth knowledge of the Insurance domain (Life, Annuities, Health, or P&C).
- Strong documentation skills: BRD, FRD, Use Cases, Process Flow Diagrams.
- Experience with tools like JIRA, Confluence, Visio, Excel.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience in mainframe modernization, cloud migration, or API integration.
- Understanding of Guidewire / Duck Creek (for P&C) or LifePro / Ingenium (for Life).
- Knowledge of Agile frameworks and certification (CSPO/PSPO/Agile BA)
