Mainframe Application Architect

Role Overview: We are looking for an experienced Mainframe Application Architect with strong hands-on and design expertise in COBOL and IMS. This role focuses on application architecture, technical leadership, and collaboration across teams to deliver scalable, reliable enterprise systems. Airline industry experience is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 8+ years of hands-on development experience with COBOL and IMS DB/DC
• 5+ years of experience in application architecture and system design 

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related technical discipline
• 3+ years of technical or team leadership experience
• Experience in the airline industry

Key Skills & Experience

• Strong expertise in application architecture, design, and SDLC
• Hands-on experience across multiple computing environments and architectures
• Proficient in Agile methodologies
• Knowledge of IBM MQ, IIB, SOA, and system integration practices
• Experience with requirements analysis, use cases, and design documentation
• Understanding of large-scale, highly available enterprise systems
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment

Key Responsibilities

• Define and oversee the technical architecture and design of applications
• Collaborate with development teams on functional and technical designs
• Review and approve design documents, code changes, and unit tests where required
• Create and maintain architecture standards, guidelines, and documentation
• Provide technical guidance, reviews, and architectural direction across projects
• Identify risks, escalate issues, and ensure projects stay on track
• Review business requirements and propose best-practice solutions
• Support system integration, performance, and operational stability
• Mentor and guide team members, promoting technical growth and independence
• Drive cost optimization and productivity improvements through technology
